Roger participated in his first art show in 2004 and hit the ground running. Since then he's had a great record of success selling his work; that on a part time basis. This is a technique that hasn't been imitated, simply because it's totally unique. Roger says, "People don't know how to copy me, because they have no idea how I do it."

Roger first photographs the individual flowers so that each image captures the essence of the individual flower as accurately as possible, but the photography is not done in the traditional sense. It’s a technique that Roger calls his “trade secret.” This is where the camera leaves off and this new technique captures them in a different way. Then the background of the photo is digitally removed, leaving just the foreground image of the flower that was captured. The resulting individual flowers are then artistically arranged in collages. Rather than looking like the "traditional" photos of flowers, the final pieces imitate oil paintings. These pieces are always done in color and digital proofs are available for immediate viewing online. Several mounting techniques are used. In one method, prints are mounted on 1/2 inch gator board and then protected through laminating so photos will not fade from ultra violet light. Others are printed directly on canvas and coated with UV protectant; then stretched on "jumbo board" frames.

“Patrons at the art shows I’ve participated in have told me that I can’t duplicate this visual experience online, because, 'you have to see the actual art to believe it.' But... you can get an idea by clicking on the image to the left to view a magnified portion.

"Look at the "Betty Boop" bud in the center, (lower center on the full image) and the leaf on the left side. Is it "Jumping Out" at you? If it is, then I got my point across. This "special effect" is simply the result of the process I use and really comes alive when observing the printed wall art.

"I have no better way online to represent what my work does to people. I hope it represents to you the possibilities when enlarged and mounted. Roger Isabell is an Adobe PhotoShop™ Certified expert that has been doing business as Photique of La Quinta, California since 1991. Formerly specializing in wedding photography, the artist created this unusual artform that must be seen to be appreciated. Although Roger's technique is only in its infancy he was a "hand selected" artist, invited to participate in Art events such as the La Quinta Arts Foundation's "Art Under the Umbrellas" and the the Coachella Valley Arts Alliances Kaleidescope in Rancho Mirage. In the spring of 2007, he participated in and was awarded First Place in category at the Indian Wells Arts Festival. He was also invited to show at the Dream Artisans Faire at the Grand Tradition in Fallbrook, California. The founder of that show gave her personal invitation to be a participant, bypassing the jury process.

Many artists mistake this wall art photography for oil paintings because Roger digitally imitates what a painter would do with flowers. Most of the pieces are garden-variety flowers, predominantly roses, that are chosen from Isabell's own gardens. Special orders are considered and a limited number of prints are sold to maintain the uniqueness and value of this art.

"After many years of experience in Portrait and Wedding Photography, I discovered a technique, that before now, I never thought possible. As soon as the idea came to me, I couldn’t wait to try it. I was not disappointed. I immediately felt driven to promote it to the greatest extent possible.

"Photographing a Bride's bouquet often presented a challenge for me, because the traditional camera limited what I could do, resulting from a camera’s and lense’s natural limitations,(namely depth-of-field and something called the law of 'inverse squares'). One or two of the flowers in the foreground, at most, would be accurately recorded in the image."

That was in the past. This new discovery… this trade secret has overcome these limitations. Every flower in the image is recorded as the foreground flower 'portrait'. Then, all of them are joined together into the ‘group portrait'. When the job is finished and printed, the individual members of the collages literally 'jump out' at you, because they imitate a painting, rather than a photograph. Roger says, “I can only assume that the reason people have mistaken them for paintings is because, as a painter in oils would record his/her subject, the eye instantly focuses and adjusts to each component. My technique allows photography to 'imitate art' in a way that heretofore hasn't been done."

Floral Photography that's often mistaken for Oil Paintings

Larger Prints range from 20"x24" upwards to 36"x48" and square prints are up to 40"x40" but by no means represent the largest possible as the quality of these images can withstand much larger size printing without any significant loss.

All images are printed using the "Giclee" standard for quality and longevity. Primarily all images are reproduced on "giclee" standard canvas and stretched "gallery style" on one and a half inch "jumbo" stretcher bar. A limited amount of images are also printed, then laminated and mounted on half-inch gator board and artistically edged and backed with stand-offs for that three dimensional look.

Roger has been commissioned to do custom work as well. Imagine your favorite rose! "If there's a way I can get my hands on a fresh bloom, I can do my thing with it."

Digitized watermarked versions of the work are available upon request. The choices are many... from individual flowers from Roger Isabell's large collection, to Isabell designed collages that would grace any home, foyer, doctor's office or reception room.
